Basaltic Magma | Types of Magma

In our previous lesson, we talked about the types of lava. These types of lava actually depended on the type of magma a volcano produces.

Magma is a molten and semi-molten rock mixture found under the surface of the Earth.

Here is an overview about each type's composition and characteristics:

For this lesson, we'll talk about that one type of magma called Basaltic magma.

Basaltic magma is the most abundant magma on earth. It could be another term for mafic lava.

Mafic lava is molten rock that is enriched in iron and magnesium and low in silica. When mafic lava cools on the earth's surface, it forms basalt, which is why mafic lava is commonly called 'basaltic lava.

( Here's an example of basalt. )

Mafic magma is formed within the earth when a portion of the earth's mantle is melted. Remember that magma is the term for underground lava.

The volcanoes fueled by basaltic magma erupt relatively quietly.
